The Cabinet des livres, a major element of the Condé Museum, was designed as a showcase to house the exceptional legacy of manuscripts belonging to the Princes of Bourbon-Condé as well as the extremely rare collection assembled by the Duc d'Aumale from 1850 onwards.
For the "prince of bibliophiles", the architect Honoré Daumet (1826-1911) designed a modern library in 1875-1876 using the latest technology of the time and integrated it remarkably well into the structure of the Renaissance Petit Château. It is one of the most beautiful libraries in the world.
The library set up in Orleans House during the prince's exile in Twickenham (England) serves as a model. The comfort of the reader and the security of the works mobilised the best techniques of the time and were thought out down to the last detail, which increased the library's power of fascination. Inspiring decor, glass cabinets, removable lecterns, retractable maps, candelabras... everything favours study and
wonder.
The exhibition allows visitors to discover the many activities of a bibliophile prince - research, study, publication, guided tours, etc. - as well as the principles that govern the constitution of bibliophilic collections. Throughout the year, the most important manuscripts and printed works are displayed in the showcases. Also on display, in rotation, are
The pieces were restored thanks to a call for participatory sponsorship, which is still underway.
