From 14 June to 21 September

To mark the 90th anniversary of its creation, the Musée de la Vénerie is looking at the work of Carle Vernet (1758-1836), a painter and lithographer with a passion for equestrianism. Son of the painter Claude Joseph Vernet and father of Horace Vernet, Carle won the Prix de Rome in 1782. He distinguished himself at the court of Napoleon Bonaparte for his equestrian portraits and military scenes. Considered one of the best horse painters of his time, he was able to transcribe the grace and gait of the noble animal onto canvas or with a few lines of drawing. Regularly invited to follow prestigious hunts, Vernet captured not only the frenetic action of the hunts, but also the elegance of the horses and their riders. In this way, he immortalised an aristocratic and sporting practice, providing a precious, not without humour, record of social life in the early 19th century.
